Rebel Spirit
In conjunction with iHeart Podcasts and Ninth Planet Audio, Webby Award-winning season one of Rebel Spirit follows Akilah’s journey back to her hometown of Florence, KY to try to compel her high school, Boone County, to change their racist, dated mascot and team name from The Rebels to something everybody in the south loves—The Biscuits. Over the course of 10 main episodes (with several bonus), Akilah and her producers Dan Sinker and Elizabeth Baquet talk to historians, alumni, mascot designers, professional athletes, and reporters (Jemele Hill, Ronan Farrow), and comedian Roy Wood Jr. about what it takes to really make lasting change in a place so reluctant. Available wherever you get your podcasts.
What a Day
For more than 400 daily episodes, Akilah and cohost Gideon Resnick greeted millions of listeners in a notably awful time for news, the 2020 pandemic. With their unique blend of journalism and comedy, the #1 Crooked Media show won a Webby Award in 2021 and continues to keep curious lefties informed.
WRITING
Akilah’s Substack has amassed more than 10,000 loyal readers with subjects ranging from best friends getting canceled to why American politics is so so stupid these days. Apparently Substack has some pretty crummy ownership, so there’s news coming this June about where Akilah will be moving her writing. Stay tuned!
Obviously: Stories from My Timeline
Released by Penguin Randomhouse in 2019, Akilah’s book of essays, Obviously: Stories from My Timeline is critically-acclaimed and features essays about moving to New York, karaoke as self-care, and what to tell people when your dad is dead but your relationship wasn’t all that great. Available wherever books are sold.

Akilah currently resides in Koreatown, Los Angeles with her very cute puppy, Fauci. She is always intending to move back to New York.

First off, she still loves the WAD Squad and has nothing but respect for Crooked Media and its mission. The news is a slog, and while she still keeps up with and posts about current events, having that be her personal and professional life got to be overwhelming. Also, she sold a show to Disney.

Akilah is making Hollywood look very stupid for sleeping on her by posting incredible videos on her YouTube channel. She also has a new show in the works with Courier Newsroom. Watch this space ;).
